Kindness meditation in schools and colleges
Loving kindness meditation is a simple meditation practice which develops goodwill and awareness toward ourselves and others.
Benefits of loving kindness meditation are:
- raises self-esteem in both adults and children
- reduces anxiety and stress
- develops emotional resilience
- encourages a kind attitude toward self and others
- counteracts anger
- increases social emotions to both loved ones, friends and new people we meet
- decreases negative moods
- enables us to face natural emotion such as sadness and grief
Loving kindness meditation like most other meditation practice has its roots in Buddhism. However, even though a Buddhist my teaching is secular unless requested otherwise.
Loving kindness meditation is a practice for everybody but I find it is particularly suitable for younger people in primary schools. It is suitable because it engages their imagination and gives them a little something to do with their minds rather than asking them to do nothing or to fellow the breath.
