THE WONDER OF AWARENESS

Just Sitting  Meditation retreat
at Vajraloka Meditation Centre, North Wales
Friday 8th August - Monday 18th August

Have you ever simply left your experience alone, allowing fear, joy, sadness or confusion to reveal itself? Judging our experience is what usually prevents this from happening. This retreat is about trusting in awareness of our experience; allowing life to be what it is - fresh and uninterrupted. As we allow things to be, we find the wisdom to face the “anxious quiver” of our being, and to relax into spacious awareness itself.

Themes covered on retreat are:

RADICAL SELF - ACCEPTANCE
Looking at how to accept all those "unacceptable" parts or ourselves and bring ourselves to a place of rest.

TRUSTING IN YOUR OWN WISDOM
Normally, what we trust in, is the analytical mind. On this retreat we will learn to listen and trust in our intuitive wisdom of the body

WHO ARE YOU - REALLY?
Looking beyond thoughts, feelings, emotions, beliefs and seeing who you really are

WHAT JUST SITTING MEDITATION IS
A look at the basic misunderstandings of Just Sitting meditation and seeing just how this simple act can help us in our own lives.

AND HOW IT HAPPENS

Seven day retreat

25th June - 2nd July

Venue: The Dharma House Near Nimes Southern France.

We all want to be happy, so why then does happiness seem so elusive?  It is because we are caught up with our agitated thinking.

We believe the image we have of our selves in our own minds. Trying to fulfil this image leaves us feeling discontented and dissatisfied with our self and our life.

It doesn't have to be like this!

There will be silence, meditation, short talks, Question & answer sessions and meditation interviews.

THEMES COVERED

How happiness happens

Happiness is not achieved by striving after it, but is seen to be our natural state when we learn to let go of unhappiness.

Living in the Tiger’s mouth

When the Tiger of strong emotion overwhelm us there is only one safe place, in the mouth of the Tiger.

Don't you worry 'bout a thing

A look at the Words of Mark Twain

I'm an old man, I've had many problems, most of them didn't happen

Who are you - really?

A FEW WORDS FROM PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN ON A WAKING THE TIGER COURSE.

"When I spend time sitting it’s as if everything around me just becomes so much simpler and clearer, not only whilst I’m doing it but in my daily life too. It’s as if I coach myself to deal with things one at a time. I am happier and I live for today."
VANESSA ROSSOUW

"I found Waking the Tiger a very practical introduction to the benefits that meditation can bring a non-spiritual person: a few key phrases that Suryacitta used keep coming back to help me : its simple, but not easy; meditation is about being awake not asleep; stay in the present; its about your relationship with yourself not the world; don't try to be something you're not- be aware of what you are. These are my things- you'll find your own I'm sure."

HAPPINESS AND HOW IT HAPPENS
an eight-week course

 Course starts Monday 28th January 7.30 - 9.30
at Brighton Buddhist Centre,
Tichborne St,
Brighton.
(please book through evolution arts - details below)

Course Outline

Note: each week will include a short talk, discussion and some meditation / awareness activity. The course is practical in nature, and is about making a difference to our lives here and now.

All are welcome and no previous experienceis needed.

1. HOW HAPPINESS HAPPENS – happiness cannot be achieved wilfully. It is seen to be our natural state when we cease living from an image we have of ourselves in our own minds.

2. THE ART OF SELF-ACCEPTANCE – this week we will learn how to accept all those ‘unacceptable’ parts of ourselves and bring the ‘inner war’ to an end.

3. LISTENING TO THE BODY – our feelings contain messages within them, and it's in the interests of our own well being to listen to these messages. This week we will learn the simple art of listening to the wisdom that lies in our very own bodies.

4. HOW WE CAN CHANGE – normally we may try and change ourselves by being hard on ourselves for being like we are. This attitude, rather than bringing about real change and peace is actually a cause of unhappiness. This week we will look at how deep and lasting change happens through kindly awareness.

5. WORKING WITH FEAR AND ANGER – fear, anger and other strong emotions can rule and even ruin our lives and our relationships with others. This week we will look at how we can best deal with strong emotions and be free from their tyranny.

6. PARADISE LOST AND REGAINED – as children we experienced a wonderful connectedness with everything around us. However, as we grow we start to experience more disconnection and isolation from the world. This week is looking at how that connectedness can be a reality for us as adults functioning in the world.

7. TRUSTING OURSELVES – as we are growing up quite often the message from the world is that ‘others know better,’ this leaves us feeling like we cannot trust our own intuition, our own instincts. This week we will look at how we can learn to trust in our own experience and intuition.

8. AWARENESS: THE SECRET OF LIFE – we all want to be happy and free. But this happiness and freedom that we so desire is not found in anything outside of us, is not found by being ‘good’ or ‘bad,’ not found in being approved of orfrom some special status, it’s not found by digesting more information about this, that and the other, but is found when we ‘see’ who we really are.

A FEW WORDS FROM PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN ON THE "HAPPINESS AND HOW IT HAPPENS" COURSE.

"This course was a revelation. The mixture of meditation practice, teaching and discussion was perfect. Each class was an opportunity to challenge my beliefs and thinking patterns and I emerged from the course with a welcome new outlook on life. An excellent touch was a list of further reading to help me deepen my understanding. I’d strongly recommend this course to anyone because it has changed my perception of life and I continue to feel the benefit of this every day".

CATHERINE GREEN-ARMYTAGE

"I found the The Happiness and How it Happens course thought-provoking, down-to-earth, practical and fun! Suryacitta clearly and gently illustrated how we can all stop being slaves to the problems we create for ourselves in an often hectic world. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to take a fresh look at the way they live their life and wants to change it for the better..."

FOCUSING &

MEDITATION

1 to 1 with Suryacitta

Focusing (similar to meditation) is the art of listening to the wisdom that lies in our very own bodies.

The body has a felt sense about all situations in every moment of our lives. Normally however, we are too caught up with our busy minds to listen to this felt sense, this wisdom. But when we do listen, this wisdom naturally leads us in the direction of healing and happiness. Focusing is listening to this wisdom.

Our feelings and emotions carry messages about ourselves, and how we are living our lives, and it’s up to us to listen to these messages. Quite often we want to get rid of our feelings, to ignore them, or to change them into more pleasant feelings. These strategies often lead to illness, unhappiness and even depression. What we can do instead is to be a friend and listen to the wisdom of our feelings, and to see what they have to ‘say’. When we listen in this way instead of ignoring or fighting them we allow the body to move in the direction of wholeness and well being.

Focusing and meditation can help with feelings of anxiety, fear, loneliness, self-esteem and confidence issues, and other personal difficulties.

They can also help with relationship issues, work issues and indeed any area of our lives.

Suryacitta has been teaching meditation for ten years. He has spent the last four years practicing and teaching meditation and focusing at a retreat centre in North Wales. He now lives and teaches in Brighton.

Sessions are by donation.
